How the RainAtlas radar works

Official radars, rebuilt every 10 minutes

We download the open radar networks of the weather services: EUMETNET OPERA for 24 European countries, the German weather service (DWD), NOAA MRMS for the United States and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) for Japan, and merge them into one rain picture every 10 minutes.

Where the rain is heading

Around Germany we use the DWD radar forecast as is. Elsewhere under radar coverage we measure how the rain moved between the two latest images and extend that motion over the next hour.

Weather models everywhere else

Where no open radar exists, the answer comes from hour-by-hour rain forecasts: ICON-D2 (2.2 km) and ICON-EU from the DWD, then NOAA GFS worldwide. Every page names the source it used.

Questions people ask

How do I know if it will rain in the next hour?

Search for your city: RainAtlas shows the rain expected every 10 minutes for the next hour, with the time it starts and stops. Under radar coverage this comes from the latest radar images moved along the measured motion of the rain.

Where do the radar images come from?

From the official radar networks of the weather services: EUMETNET OPERA (24 European countries), the German weather service (DWD), NOAA MRMS in the United States and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in Japan. The map is rebuilt every 10 minutes.

Does the rain radar cover the whole world?

The radar covers most of Europe and the United States. Everywhere else, rain for the next hours comes from weather models (ICON and GFS), and each page says which source it used.

How often is the rain forecast updated?

The radar every 10 minutes, the hour-by-hour rain forecast with every new model run, several times a day.

Is RainAtlas free?

Yes, every page is free to read. Only the API for developers and companies has paid plans beyond 500 free calls a day.
